Heavy Metals Toxicity and how to deal with it

When I first read about heavy metals and their dangers, I dismissed it as inconsequential. The huge threats to my mind in our modern world are GMOs and Roundup-lathered foods that are all over the world; or it is the innumerable bacteria and fungi and viruses that play regular havoc with our lives. But as I dug deeper, I realized how horribly exposed we are to heavy metals in our lives including here in the US.


The big 4 heavy metals that can wreak havoc with our lives are lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic

And these horrible things lurk in places we don’t often suspect.


Cadmium seriously affects the brain and inhibits the body’s ability to use nutrients like calcium, zinc, iron among others. Bone and immune system disorders are often a result of cadmium poisoning effects.

  • Cadmium exposure is rising worldwide as cadmium containing products like re-chargeable nickel-cadmium batteries are rarely recycled, but dumped with normal waste.
  • Another rampant source is cigarette smoking, including second-degree smoke (so shoo those smokers away or run in the other direction yourself)
  • Food sources of cadmium can include shellfish, liver, and kidney meats, as well as vegetarian foods such as grain cereal products, potatoes, and some leafy vegetables.
  • Exposure can also occur if you live or work close to a cadmium emitting factory.
  • And who knew: you can be exposed to cadmium if you make ceramics, jewelry, or enameled crafts. You may also be exposed through glassblowing, painting, or ingesting an herbal remedy that contains cadmium.
  • Other sources include: Automobile seat covers, Black rubber, Burned motor oil, Evaporated milk, Fertilizers, Floor coverings, Fungicides, Furniture, Refined wheat flour (white flour), Silver polish, Soft drinks from vending machines with cadmium in the pipes (6)


  • The most obvious source is contaminated fish. Particularly avoid fish such as shark, swordfish and tuna; fish (such as pike, walleye and bass) taken from polluted fresh waters. (3)
  • Another overlooked source is dental amalgams and fillings containing mercury. If you do have such a filling, have them safely removed by a dentist who specializes in this procedure.


Lead poisoning has been implicated in dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, learning disabilities. Even small amounts of lead can cause serious health problems, particularly for children under 6 years.

  • Occurs mainly via food and air.
  • Lead-based paint is still found across America in older homes.
  • Lead pipes, brass plumbing fixtures and copper pipes soldered with lead can release lead particles into tap water. Lead solder in food cans, banned in the United States, is still used in some countries.Lead sometimes can also be found in:
    • Soil. Lead particles from leaded gasoline or paint settle on soil and can last years. Lead-contaminated soil is still a major problem around highways and in some urban settings. Some soil close to walls of older houses contains lead.
    • Household dust. Household dust can contain lead from lead paint chips or from contaminated soil brought in from outside.
    • Pottery. Glazes found on some ceramics, china and porcelain can contain lead that can leach into food served or stored in the pottery.
    • Toys. Lead is sometimes found in toys and other products produced abroad.
    • Cosmetics. Tiro, an eye cosmetic from Nigeria, has been linked to lead poisoning.
    • Herbal or folk remedies. Lead poisoning has been linked to greta and azarcon, traditional Hispanic medicines, as well as some from India, China and other countries.
    • Mexican candy. Tamarind, an ingredient used in some candies made in Mexico, might contain lead.
    • Lead bullets. Time spent at firing ranges can lead to exposure.
    • Occupations. People are exposed to lead and can bring it home on their clothes when they work in auto repair, mining, pipe fitting, battery manufacturing, painting, construction and certain other fields.

Food containers are often lined with lead causing lead poisoning. Particularly watch for glazed ceramics including crockpots which may contain lead. If you use your slow cooker crockpot often, be sure to check with the manufacturer regarding lead safety. (FDA tested several glazed ceramics for lead, and none of the known crockpot brands were found guilty of containing lead; if you do want to be sure that any product in your home is free of lead, you can buy one of these home lead testing kits).   • Main sources are food and water.
  • Food-based arsenic usually occurs due to absorption from soil. Most foods do not absorb much arsenic from the soil except for rice. (5)
  • Rice can contain appreciable amounts of arsenic; the FDA monitors rice and rice products for arsenic levels.
  • Important to note too that since arsenic in food occurs through soil and groundwater absorption, organic foods will not protect from arsenic in food.


Since heavy metals are environmental toxins, we cannot avoid them entirely. Yet, they are dangerous. We can certainly mitigate and safely remove the buildup in our bodies so that it does not cause any serious harm.

So what does this have to do with exercise? Well, for somebody who is under chronic emotional stress and whose adrenal glands are constantly overworked, their cortisol production is already high and their ability to produce adrenaline has been largely exhausted. As the cortisol levels increase, there is a greater and greater tendency to store fat in the lower abdomen.

Many people in this condition who are determined to lose weight will see their inability to lose weight as an indication that they need to exercise harder and more often. These people may be able to continue to lose weight in general, because if you are burning more calories than you take in, you will lose weight, but they never are able to eliminate that lower belly fat. So they work out even harder, but the belly fat remains – and they become more and more fatigued and actually begin to lose strength in the muscles of the arms and legs.

As we’ve already stated, there may be loss of muscle in the arms and legs, and this could be visibly noticeable, or it may manifest simply as an inability to build strength in these muscles. In addition, people with adrenal fatigue and high cortisol may have a collection of symptoms that could include chronic fatigue, cravings for salty foods, a need for caffeine or other stimulants just to stay awake during the day, swelling in the lower legs, dizziness when arising quickly from a seated position, numerous arthritic problems, cramps in the calves at night, and waking up frequently in the middle of the night.


If you do fall into this category of adrenal fatigue/ high cortisol, exercise is still important, but you want the sort of exercise that helps you to handle stress, not exercise that creates additional stress. For someone with overworked adrenals, the best type of exercise is relatively low-intensity aerobic exercise for 30 to 60 minutes about 3 times per week. This is exercise you can do without getting out of breath and without feeling fatigued afterwards. Among the options for this type of exercise are walking, bicycling, swimming, yoga, tai chi, and low-intensity aerobics. Exercising outdoors seems to be particularly helpful for stress reduction, and subsequently cortisol reduction, at least when there are no extremes of temperature to deal with.

Eat Nutritious Foods

Besides going to a lower-intensity type of exercise, it is important to make sure to eat enough protein to maintain muscle mass. This is easily accomplished by most people, but if you’ve been drastically cutting calories to lose weight, you are probably actually working against yourself. Just 3 to 4 ounces of meat, fish, eggs, or dairy three times per day is sufficient to spare your muscle. If you are a vegan, just make sure to eat plenty of beans, nuts, seeds, and other high-protein foods. If you’ve been working out like crazy to try to get rid of that belly fat, but all you’ve managed to accomplish was feeling tired, weak, and sore, by reducing the intensity of your workouts and regulating stress better, you’ll likely find that the belly fat gradually shrinks away and you’ll look great

In ayurveda, diet and digestion are given equal importance in maintaining good health. Just as choosing wrong foods for your constitution can cause imbalances, following improper routines and habits can ruin your digestion, turning even carefully chosen and prepared foods into ama or toxins in your system rather than ojas, the biochemical essence that supports all aspects of life, health, bliss and longevity.

General Ayurvedic Principles You Can Follow

Here are some widely applicable principles of eating that ayurvedic healers advise to keep your digestion working efficiently:

  1. Eat three meals a day. Fasting and missing meals are not recommended in ayurveda because they throw the digestion cycle off. A light breakfast, a substantial lunch and a light dinner allow you to keep in tune with the ebb and flow of the digestive fire, which strengthens during the morning, comes to a head around noon and then recedes again in the evening.
  2. Lemon Tea In The Morning: As soon as you rise, drink a cup of hot water to which a tablespoon of lemon juice has been added. This will help elimination, get the digestive juices moving, and scrub out the digestive tract. Caffeinated beverages are not recommended in ayurveda.
  3. A light breakfast is essential to kick-start the digestion and provide energy necessary to get through the routine of the day. If you hold back until lunch to eat a proper meal, chances are you’ll be tempted to wade into that packet of potato chips or get a doughnut some time during the morning. Have a stewed apple or pear, and after that follow 30 minutes later with some warm cereal or a whole-wheat flatbread spread with a little honey or almond butter. Warm cooked foods are favored as breakfast items over cold cereal, cold milk and cold juice, all of which are harder on the waking digestive fire.
  1. For a mid-morning snack, choose fresh fruit– an apple for Kapha, a sweet pear for Pitta and a mango or some strawberries for Vata. Fruit is best eaten in the morning, and on its own.
  2. The optimal ayurvedic lunch includes two or three kinds of vegetables, one of which should be a leafy green; a lentil or bean dish or a paneer dish; a whole grain; a chutney or relish; a small helping of a warm salad or soup; and lassi, a beverage made by blending together fresh yogurt and water. Every one of the dishes should be cooked with dosha-appropriate spices, and using a dosha-appropriate healthy fat– ghee for Vata and Pitta and olive oil for Kapha are good choices. This may seem like a huge meal, but portions are kept small to moderate– the variety is crucial for wholesome, balanced nutrition.
  1. If you really need a mid afternoon snack, eat a small helping of soaked nuts (almonds should be blanched) if you are trying to balance Vata, or some sunflower or pumpkin seeds if you are trying to balance Pitta or Kapha. Popcorn in moderation without salt or butter is also fine for Kapha, and soaked blanched almonds for Pitta.
  2. For dinner eat a small, light meal a one dish vegetable grain casserole or a vegetable/lentil soup with a whole-wheat flatbread, for example.

Other Good Practices To Follow

Drink lots of pure water through the day, but limit your water or beverage intake at meals. Do not drink iced, carbonated or caffeinated beverages and avoid alcohol and milk with meals.

At bedtime, drink a cup of warm milk spiced with nutmeg for Vata, cardamom for Pitta and ginger for Kapha.

Cook fresh for every meal. Fresh foods are easier to digest, so cook only what you think you will eat at a meal. To enhance the appetite, have a slice of fresh ginger root spiked with some rock salt and fresh lemon juice about an hour before a meal. Chew fennel seeds after a meal to enhance digestion and freshen the breath naturally. Taking rasayanas such as Amalaki and Triphala after a meal also boosts digestion and assimilation and helps the system flush out ama regularly.


 Eat at around the same times each day Like your sleep, wake cycle, your digestion will also benefit from a regular routine. Pre program meal times into your day so that you have the time to take care of sustaining yourself. Water and food are next only to air for survival.

When your digestion is trained to kick in at those set times through regular practice, it functions efficiently to build more ojas from the foods you eat. Ojas is the most refined product of the digestive process– the biochemical essence that sustains life and health. Nutrients from the foods you eat are absorbed and assimilated to the maximum extent by your body, and wastes are flushed out effectively, leaving little room for ama– digestive toxins– to build up in the body and act as a breeding ground for imbalances and disorders.

Avoid incompatible food combinations Ayurvedic texts outline some food combinations that overtax the digestion and lead to increased ama build-up. Milk and cream, for example, should not be combined with salty or sour tastes. Melons should not be eaten with heavy foods like cheese, deep fried foods or the heavier grains. Fruit, in general, should be eaten on its own because it is very quickly digested. Meat or fish should not be taken together with milk. Honey should never be heated or cooked.

In general, if you follow the meal guidelines and food suggestions given above, you will avoid most incompatible food combinations. One general rule to follow is to not eat foods with several digestion times at one sitting.

Make your meals with care and love All things is connected. For the food to eat to become ojas, you need to prepare it with attention, a positive attitude, caring and love. Many traditions hold the acts of cooking and eating sacred. In the Vedic tradition, the chef bathes and offers thanks to agni– fire– before initiating the task of preparing the first meal of the day for the family. Do not prepare meals (or eat) when you are upset or stressed, because your liver and digestion are adversely affected by negative emotions and will not digest that meal efficiently.

Eat in the area or room allocated for eating in your home or workplace, not in front of the television or at your computer. Diffuse a pleasant aroma blend in your dining area about an hour before you will begin eating lemon, coriander, sweet orange and mint are good choices to whet the appetite and get the digestive juices flowing. Spruce up your dining table with fresh flowers or a pretty tablecloth. Ensure everything you need for your meal is at hand before you sit to eat so you do not have to get up or be distracted from your meal once you start eating.

Practice mindful eating. Ours is, sadly, an on the run, 24/7, get everything done yesterday world. Extending multi tasking to eating is one often-seen practice that probably causes many health problems that could be avoided if one only took the time to accord the meal the attention it deserves. The time that is regarded as lost by doing nothing but eating can more than likely be made up in increased energy and productivity the relished, well-digested meal returns to you. Eating in silence, with all your senses focused on the aromas, flavors, colors and textures on your plate is best, with muted, pleasantly relaxing conversation or soft music in the background a second-best option. Arguments, highly stimulating discussions and disciplining children are activities not suited to mealtimes.


Other mindful eating habits to follow:

  • Do not work or speak on the telephone when you eat. Do not read or watch television.
  • Offer thanks or sit in silence a minute before you begin eating.
  • Do not gulp down your food; enjoy each bite and chew well before you swallow. A few sips of warm water during the meal will help digestion, but do not drink a lot of any beverage.
  • At any meal, do not eat until you are very full. The ideal ayurvedic portion is what you could hold in your two cupped hands joined together. Leaving some room in the stomach when you are done enhances digestion.
  • After you are done eating, sit quietly for a few minutes; do not immediately rush off to perform the next chore of the day.
