You May Need To Eat Gluten Free, But You Don’t Have To Eat All That Junk!
That’s right. We just said the unspeakable: your gluten free foods may be doing you more harm than good. The reason is that a large number of them are actually junk foods masquerading as healthy foods. Now why would manufacturers make this junk?
Well, for one, it is cheaper to make junk foods filled with chemicals and unutterable names. For another, the gluten free community is to blame too. Most people, when they switch over to a gluten free diet, crave the breads and cookies and sugary, fatty, salty snacks that they had on their non-GF diet. Not only that, they want the stuff to taste exactly like the non-gluten counterparts. Guess what manufacturers are going to do? Right, they will feed the GF frenzy.
Attend a gluten free vendor fair, a celiac disease conference, do a search for gluten free food blogs or follow the #glutenfree hashtag on twitter and you will be inundated with recipes for breads, cakes, cookies and desserts. – Source: Nourished Health
Most Gluten Free Food Isn’t Real Food At All
We couldn’t have put it better ourselves:
Gluten is a HUGE problem for many people, don’t get me wrong… but simply switching to a gluten-free diet isn’t enough.
Most people are sold the idea that it will help them feel better, yet the research shows it’s not working as advertised. In most cases, people continue to eat the same types of food they were accustomed to eating on the Standard American Diet by simply swapping out the gluten for even more processed junk food (i.e. see my previous chart above indicating most people buy gluten-free chips, cereal, bread, and entrées ).
The problem is most gluten-free foods still contain many toxic and inflammatory ingredients that make you sicker. To sum it all up, there’s a huge difference between healthy and un-healthy gluten-free foods out there.
And to be frank: most gluten-free food isn’t “real food” at all. It’s junk food with healthy clothes on.

Or take this, for instance:
And yet, gluten-free packaged foods have one important thing in common with their glutinous counterparts: The majority of them are absolute junk. These include empty-calorie chips, crackers and bars that are high in starchy carbs and sugar while low in fiber; breads made from the least nutritious starches on the planet and held together by food gums; and high-glycemic cereals made from white rice flour or refined corn that’s been sprinkled with vitamin dust. In other words, from a nutritional standpoint, many (most?) people without celiac disease may be far better off having a simple bowl of sugar-free Shredded Wheat, a gluten-containing piece of spelt bread or minimally processed Scandinavian crispbread than they would the vast majority of their gluten free alternatives today. And while I’m encouraged to see the nutritional quality of some gluten-free packaged foods improving, there still remains only a minority of gluten-free packaged foods that I’d consider truly nutritious and health-promoting. As such, I encourage my patients to consider the merits of a given food based on what it does contain rather than what it doesn’t. – Source: US News
Why It Is Important To Eat Cleaner & Healthier Gluten Free Foods
Eating clean and healthy GF is imperative for those of you who are have celiac disease or have gluten intolerance. In both cases, you have to heal your gut, sometimes this can take years, and the only way to get there is by eating healthier foods: eating foods that are as free from junk and trash like MSG, colors, preservatives, additives, GMOs.
But even if you do not have food intolerances or celiac, and are somehow doing a gluten free diet because it makes you feel better (many people swear they feel better on a GF diet), then too you must be aware that you cannot get away with eating junky GF foods. Here’s a big reason why, in fact trillions of reasons:
You see, the sea of bacteria living in your gut, are altered every time you make such a drastic change to your diet.
Well, new research is beginning to suggest a gluten-free diet has harmful impacts to the good bacteria in our gut.
A 2010 study, published in Gut Microbes, revealed that “the changes in the microbiota found in healthy subjects following a GFD were to some extent similar as those detected previously in patients after compliance with a long-term GFD.”
The authors went on to say that:
“…analysis of fecal microbiota and dietary intake indicated that numbers of healthy gut bacteria decreased, while numbers of unhealthy bacteria increased parallel to reductions in the intake of polysaccharides after following the GFD… individuals under a GFD would be more susceptible to overgrowth of harmful bacteria and infections, which might be associated with unpleasant symptoms and increased health risks.” Source: SCD Lifestyle
